Smiros & Smiros Architects
We worked directly with Jason McHugh at Smiros & Smiros Architects on their sleek Pool House project in Garden City New York. The pool house features three Luke Lamp Co. fixtures - two Tracer Bars and a custom Tracer Loop layout. Recently, we sat down with Jason to get his thoughts on design and how he approaches his work.
Tell us more about how you became a designer.
Wow, great question! In 7th Grade, a friend and his family exposed me to architecture, design, and art, and it stuck! At that moment, I knew I wanted to be an architect.
How would you describe your design style?
Our work has a broad range but is all rooted in classical principles that can be applied to many different styles. Our market still calls for work that is traditional-to-transitional with some occasional modern.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever received, either personally or professionally?
Always protect the design quality which will protect your reputation in the long run, even if it comes with temporary negative effects on business.
What is the best part of your job?
While I always enjoy most designing and developing those designs, the problem-solving keeps me engaged daily!
What are some trends that you see now that will stand the test of time? Or is there a trend you are shying away from?
The trend away from multiple, smaller spaces continues, and larger open plans dominate. This still requires smaller, intimate spaces as a balance. Over-materiality, the use of too many differing materials is something that we shy away from as we seek order and balance in our designs.
